Maintenance Above and Below Ground
Maintenance of pipeline and tunnelling puts workers of telecommunication companies, construction, tunnelling and maintenance companies at risk. Past spillage’s or leaks provided an explosive hazard particularly to welders. Oil spilt into a flooded trench may travel many kilometres and endanger people not expecting a flammable risk. Some chemicals become flammable when they are heated by giving off vapours and sewerage sludge evolves methane when it is disturbed so the flammable risk may increase as work continues.
Storage areas
Most storage areas for flammable gases or liquids are either outside or are in well-ventilated buildings e.g. chemical and fuel gas manufacturers, aerosol fillers, hospitals, universities and commercial LPG users. However spillage during loading of vehicles and leaks leads to fire hazards. Fixed gas detectors are usual in these applications.
Everyday Places
Gas or oil fired boilers are widely use in hospitals, hotels, banks, schools, sports centres, factories and offices and they usually run continuously and automatically. There is always a risk usually minor leakage because of loose fittings or pipe fracture. Extremes of temperature or a heavy vehicle outside the building may cause fracture of underground pipes and the gas or oils may seep along the pipework into the boiler room. Wall mount controllers with flammable gas detectors are the best way to warn the problems.
